about

A technique now ubiquitous in video game scores is one called vertical layering, or the practice of dividing a composition into multiple, separate layers that can both play independently and compliment the other sections. Highlands represents an exploration of this concept in the context of a background track from an imagined fantasy role-playing game. The recorders, strings, harp and percussion in this piece combine to evoke an image of rugged mountains and lush green scenery.

I have divided Highland's instruments into three separate layers resulting in seven possible layer combinations. Thus this one-minute long piece has seven-minutes worth of unique arrangements. As a challenge, see if you can identify the instruments in each layer and which combination is playing at any given time!
