about

Known as the international signal for distress, SOS is instantly recognizable in Morse code as a sequence of three dits, three dahs, and three dits (· · · – – – · · ·). The rhythmic potential of this code inspired me to synthesize my own distress signal, one that could believably emit from a damaged ship lost in deep space. Using this as a central motif, I scored an imagined scene in which a rescue ship responds to a distress signal coming from a motionless and unresponsive vessel. The piece SOS takes us through the rescue team's dangerous attempt to dock the abandoned ship amidst an incoming storm of debris as well as their subsequent exploration of the vessel's dim, lifeless corridors. It's only shortly after boarding that the team discovers why the crew disappeared without a trace.
